Expert Tuition

NESMS exists to provide tuition at an advanced level for musically talented individuals of all ages.  To do this we bring internationally recognized teachers to our centre in Aberdeen on a regular basis – normally nine times a year.  We have four teaching studios, one of which is large enough to hold small concerts or recitals, and an extensive library.  The studios each have pianos (two Boston grands and two Essex uprights) purchased from Steinway in 2014.

Performance opportunities

We know that success in public performance increases musical confidence and awareness. And so for those who want to develop the ability to deal confidently with an audience we provide suitably supported opportunities to perform both within and beyond the School as a solo player or as part of an ensemble – in for example our Flute Choir, Chamber Group or Wind Ensemble.

Entry Requirements

Entry to NESMS is by audition, and enquiries from parents, teachers, schoolchildren, full-time or part-time students and working or retired adults are welcome.  We try to accommodate anyone who has reached a suitable level of attainment whatever their circumstances or musical background.

Our one-to-one tuition is aimed at pianists and instrumentalists who have reached or are approaching ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall Grade 5. For vocalists the starting requirements are more practical and relate to voice maturity, experience of singing solo or in groups, etc. The audition lesson itself is quite informal – its aim is to ensure that both pupil and tutor are happy with a continuing arrangement.

Tuition in Theory, Sight-reading, Aural, and General Musicianship can be provided including preparation for the ABRSM and Trinity examinations at Grade 5 or above as well as advice on more creative aspects of music such as Composition and Improvisation.

We also offer Beginner lessons through small-group teaching where children in the 6-9 age range are introduced to music with skill building musicianship activities and an opportunity to learn Recorder.

Fees and Scholarships

Students pay their own fees, but costs are kept to a minimum thanks to the fundraising efforts of volunteers and the generosity of trusts, foundations, companies and private individuals. Scholarships for pupils in full-time education (applied for annually) are awarded on merit and auditions are held each November to secure funding for the next calendar year.

Thanks to assistance provided by the John Gordon Foundation, the Ernest Cook Trust and Aberdeen City Council, a fund is also available to help pay lesson fees for students in financial hardship, whether in full-time education or not.
